Activated Magazine: 2006 Activated Issues

January 2006

It’s been six years since the first Activated magazine was published. Over sixty-five issues and over four million copies later, some or all of the nearly 700 articles to date are now available in 23 languages. Those articles have dealt with about 100 widely diverse topics, but nearly all of them come back to at least one of three principles—hearts are the same the world over, God can solve our problems, and love is the key.

Enjoy the 10 “golden oldie” articles in this 6th Anniversary issue.

Success in life begins with a sound personal relationship with the Creator of life, followed closely by sound relationships with those around us. In fact, it’s impossible to be truly happy without either of those. Jesus gave us the key to both when He said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37–39).
Every day is a new challenge, a new chance, a new adventure, and anything is possible, because nothing is impossible for God!

In a survey of journalists conducted by Newseum, an online exhibition of news journalism, 38 of the top 100 news stories of the 20th century were science related. A closer study of the list is even more telling. Most of the top science-related stories are clustered near the end of the century, and later advancements leapfrog earlier ones in the ratings. Personal computers (number 31 on the list) and the Internet (32) rank ahead of radio (40) and TV (43), for instance. Also, not surprisingly, the top spot in the Newseum survey goes to the century’s crowning technological “achievement”—the atomic bomb.
Where will today’s hot topics—cloning, stem cell research, genetic manipulation, computer chip implants, and the ecological fallout of technology in its myriad forms—rank on the next Newseum survey?

In a story from Native American folklore, a grandfather explains to his young grandson the inner struggle between good and evil.
“A battle goes on inside us all,” the grandfather begins. “It is a battle between two wolves. One wolf is the embodiment of everything evil, like hate, anger, jealousy, resentment, greed, arrogance, lying, and selfishness. The other wolf is the embodiment of everything good, like love, joy, peace, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, empathy, generosity, compassion, truth, and faith.”
The grandson thinks about those words and then asks, “Which wolf wins?”
The grandfather replies, “The one you feed.”
Apply that lesson to the main themes of this issue—discouragement and depression and their antitheses, positiveness and praise—and you’ve got the key to a happier, more upbeat, and more successful you!

Pride: Pride is a leading cause of loneliness because it throws up walls between us and others. Pride makes us fear failure, which often leads to actual failure. It makes us critical, intolerant, and impatient. In short, pride is the enemy of happiness. It’s also part of our human nature.
There is hope, though, and an antidote—humility. That quality is usually a bit harder to come by, but it is available to all of us and is within our reach. We just need to want it and cultivate it. Like anything else that doesn’t come naturally, that takes conscious and consistent effort, but God will help us if we try. “This is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will”—and He would much rather see us humble and happy than proud problem cases—”He hears and answers us” (1 John 5:14–15).

Can you imagine being given a Christmas gift and not opening it for 20 years? Well, that’s exactly what I did. Year after year I unwrapped all of my other gifts and enjoyed them for a few minutes or a few months. I don’t know why I never got around to opening that one gift. When I was small, my other gifts all looked more fun, I suppose, and as I grew older, I thought I knew what was inside and wasn’t interested.
Then one July evening I bumped into an old friend on the street and he handed me, of all things, that Christmas gift I’d ignored all those years. I opened it mostly to please my friend, who was clearly quite excited about it and seemed convinced that it was just what I needed. And to my astonishment, he was right! Suddenly the other Christmas gifts of 20 years paled by comparison.
And it gets better. This gift is for everybody. If you haven’t unwrapped yours yet, let this be the Christmas you do. It’s the one that bears this note: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). - Keith Phillips
